Influencers Role


When you are influencing a group of people, there will be a variety of people present. This means a variety of opinions, thought process and backgrounds. Here you should ensure that everyone feels welcomed to share their opinion. So in times where individuals are attacked on their ideas, remind them that everyone is welcomed to their opinion. For those who are awfully quiet, encourage them but dont push them to give their input.


In this point one has to maintain neutrality, in other words, being impartial especially when issues occur within the team, your aim should be in the best interest of the team and not as an individual. This means you should have the ability to be able to get a variety of contributions and evaluations. However, making a final decision that is a win win for all or win win for the majority.


As human beings it is understandable that we are not always fully 100 percent. So as a lead/influencer, you have to try and bring forth a positive energy, this can be through positive reinforcement, words of affirmation and rewards. This will ensure an increase in group productivity.


As a leader, you should be aware that different techniques and environments work for different people. In order to combat that, it is important to suggest a variety of ways of doing things. This can be through, audio, visual, and even physical. One can even use a variety of environments. Always look for a variety of ways of doing something so that people can maintain their interest in what you are doing/saying. Having followup meetings or feedback sessions can prove useful

List some ideas of what an influencer role does not entail?

An influencer should not superimpose their selfish opinions on the team because whoever they are influencing, they are part of that team now as opposed to themself. Influencing does not mean independence.


An influencer does not have the right to decide that their opinion or someone else's opinion is better than another. Everyone is equal and everyone is entitled to share their opinion.

LISTENING

Listening is a key attribute needed in order to exert influence and to communicate with people you are trying to influence. Many people think that exerting influence on others is just solely on the way you speak to people. This is not the case, speaking and listening is a dual process heavily reliant on one another.In other words to effectively influence, there is always some sort of give and take. For example, asking a question, giving a listening ear to someone and taking away the information they are providing you with and vice versa. I personally believe that there is more power in listening than there is speaking.


Influence is not just about you speaking because that would mean that you are having a monologue. Instead it is a dialogue. This means you now have a communication partner/buddy. By listening, you are effectively demonstrating to the relevant party, that you are paying attention to the information they have shared.


As mentioned in the Effective communication guide, listen to understand instead of listen to speak. Many people always have a rebuttal before a point is usually made, and the rebuttal, most times does not make sense or go hand in hand with the initial point made by the other speaker.



Listening does not mean that you will always understand what the other party is saying. In order to show the other party that you are paying attention to what they said or you want them to confirm something you are uncertain of, ask them questions! You may want to show them that you are listening, by summarising what they have said to them.



Do not interrupt or change the subject or make everything about you.

If you are someone who gets distracted easily try and remove the distraction, e.g put your phone away, go to a quiet room etc.

Show you are listening through body language etc. the nodding and eye contact.

Ask probing questions - e.g ‘wow so how did you do it?’

Think before responding. You can even ask them to give you a minute to think.

Can you think of any other thing that you can do to be a good listener?



BODY LANGUAGE


This is a non-verbal way of communication. This shows that you are listening and shows others you are interested.

Another key way to show active listening is through body language and facial Expression (nodding, eye contact, look interested)


VISION

Ambition/Vision - Having a goal - looking into the future.


Planning how to get there and taking actions that will take you there.


This shows your commitment to your end goal and will breed results.

People are influenced by those who know what they want and have a plan on how to get there - it provides a sense of security.



PREPARATION


Preparation - Fail to Plan or Plan to fail.

Many people believe they have planned once they clarify what they want.

That is not good enough. You need to also set a price on how you will achieve it. Using risk management also.


UNDERSTANDING

Understanding - Try and get an understanding of people and ideas rather than dictating yours. Leadership is not a dictatorship.

There is still a level of team work required to lead. It is not ALL about you and your point of view.




VOCAL


Vocal - Not about singing but sharing your ideas with a clear and suitable paced speaking speed.

If you can convey your message with confidence, enthusiasm and clarity, people will automatically be drawn to you.

In the same breath, make sure to give those you are influencing a voice also.


CONNECTION/NETWORK


In other words, build a rapport with the other party.


Try and know things about them, what do they like, dislike? Now you don’t have to be best friends with them but try and gain an understanding of who they are.



Finding common grounds is a great way to connect. If you can build trust and connection with the other party, chances are, they will be more respectful and open to a respectful and open conversation with you.


Connection decreases the level of misinterpretation



ACCEPTANCE


Acceptance of other Point of views – To influence a Team consists of more than one person which means that it is not just you.


This means being open to other people’s thoughts, opinions and views. Do not be dismissive and do not become a dictator, there is a difference between dictatorship and leadership.



Now you do not have to agree with their point of view but accept them as their truth. Do not dismissive it.
